Dear 1st Grade Students and Caretakers/Learning Coaches,

Welcome to my 1st Grade class! My name is Lisa Sutherland, and I am very excited to be your online teacher this school year. I am looking forward to getting to know you and working with you as we go through this new online learning adventure together.

ABOUT ME:
I graduated from Brigham Young University in 2012 with a B.S. in Elementary Education and an emphasis in Early Childhood Education. I currently hold a Level 2 Elementary Education License, as well as a Level 2 Early Childhood Education License. This certifies me to teach preK-3rd grade, as well as 1st-8th grade. I have 11 years of experience in education working with grades K-12 as a teacher, tutor, teacher’s aide, substitute teacher, and online teacher.

I love to travel and have had opportunities to work in classrooms all over the world in Italy, Japan, and Washington, D.C. I love reading, cooking, eating delicious food, and spending time with my friends and family, especially my husband Greg and little boy Graham who just turned one. Most importantly, I love teaching and am grateful for this online teaching opportunity with Utah Connections Academy!

FOR STUDENTS:
As a virtual student, you are expected to spend an average of 6 hours on schoolwork each school day. The recommended courses and lessons to complete each day can be found in your student planner online. If these are all completed each day, you can record 6 hours for attendance, even if it doesn’t take that long. Students, I encourage you to do your best to stay on pace with your daily and weekly assignments.

FOR PARENTS:
I believe that children’s best partners in education are their parents, especially in this virtual learning experience. I look forward to joining with you to give your child a rewarding educational experience this year. Please remember that I am here to help and support you as a learning coach.

CONTACT INFO:
I will be available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM-4:00 PM. You can reach out to me through webmail, phone calls, or text message. During this time, I will be available to answer any questions students or parents might have and discuss or help with the current assignments. If I am in a meeting or busy at that time, I will respond as soon as possible. As a reminder, please remember to use appropriate etiquette and respectful communication with me and especially with classmates throughout the semester.

LIVE LESSON CLASS MEETINGS:
Please plan to join us for our Live Lessons everyday from 9-10 AM. The Zoom Class link can be found in your student planner. We will continue to have our class Live Lesson meeting each day at 9:00 AM and it will last approximately one hour. All class Live Lesson meetings will be recorded and posted on our 1st grade class website to watch later if you are unable to make it at the scheduled time although this should be a rare exception. I am so excited to get to know each of you and hope you are looking forward to learning a lot and making memories together!
